Marcellus Shale drilling has resulted in both benefits and disadvantages in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, according to The Record.

Natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania has increased the natural gas supply in New Jersey, which has in turn eased natural gas prices in that state. Air quality has also improved since shale drilling has decreased since many power plants have switched to natural gas power instead of coal. One disadvantage to drilling in New Jersey is the land that has been cleared to make way for pipelines to carry natural gas throughout the state.

In Pennsylvania, residents have endured polluted air and water from gas drilling and wastewater spills. Increased truck traffic to drilling sites has also affected people who live near wells. Even with the negative impacts, the oil and gas industry has created jobs and increased tax revenue in Pennsylvania.
