Two years ago the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a record-breaking $8.9 million fine against Range Resources with the intention of cracking down on faulty drilling operations. However, more recently the department quietly settled the case without financial penalties, according to StateImpact.

Claiming the company continually failed to fix a gas well that polluted five residential wells, groundwater and a stream with methane in Lycoming County, the DEP issued the fine in May of 2015. Range appealed the case to the Environmental Hearing Board.

The decision not to fine Range Resources came a week after the departure of DEP Secretary John Quigley.
