Minimum distance between homes and wells considered in Wyoming

With the well-being of residents at stake, the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has proposed a new minimum distance between oil wells and homes, reports the Casper Star Tribune.

Horizontal drilling at least 500 feet from homes — 1,000 feet from schools and hospitals — is intended to promote safety and health for residents. Residents in other states have reported unpleasant odors, illnesses and water contamination, which they say could potentially stem from wells drilled on or near their property.

The 500 foot distance was decided upon based on other states’ regulations for well placement. The proposal has created tensions between landowners and energy companies.
