Oil and Gas Conference to Showcase Advancements

WEXFORD, Pa. — As the Marcellus shale play continues to place Pennsylvania firmly in the center of a global energy game-changer, the 2012 Eastern Oil and Gas Conference will offer insight on the players, the technology, the issues and opportunities associated with this new age of domestic and abundant energy development.
Speakers
Slated for Aug. 28 and 29 at the Monroeville Convention Center and the adjacent Doubletree Pittsburgh/Monroeville Convention Center, the conference will include presentations from: Scott Perry, deputy secretary, PA Department of Environmental Protection, Implementation of Act 13 and DEP Update — Policy and Politics; Randy Albert, CNX Gas, president, View from PIOGA Producers Leaders Panel; Matt Kellogg, IPAA, manager of government affairs, Federal Update and National Outreach; Ron Pettengill, EVP, Gas, Coal Group, Water Resources and Using Solar Powered Water Treatments; and Richard Gmerek, president, Gmerek Government Relations, Political Climate for Natural Gas Development in Pennsylvania.
“We’ve assembled a group of speakers that offer a 360-degree perspective on the issues, opportunities and wide-ranging considerations regarding today’s oil and gas development,” states Lou D’Amico, president and executive director of the Pennsylvania Independent Oil and Gas Association.

In addition to the conference, the event will also host the only full-scale oil and gas trade show in the Eastern U.S. With more than 325 exhibitors filling the convention center floors, visitors will see first-hand, some of the greatest advancements in the products and services reshaping the way America — and the world — harness vast reservoirs of clean energy sources.
Companies will be showing products and services of interest to the shale gas industry and conventional oil and gas producers alike.

What is fracking?
Fracking is a slang term for hydraulic fracturing. Fracturing is a process by which highly pressurized fluid is pumped thousands of feet into the ground to fracture rock formations. The goal is to release the natural gas that’s locked inside the rock.
Is it safe?
What most concerns people about fracturing is ground water contamination. The worry is that fractures underground, caused by the process, will extending upwards and into aquifers, releasing gas and chemicals into the ground water supply. There’s been no confirmed reports of such a thing happening. Though surface spills and drill site blowouts can lead to localized environmental concerns.
Will my water catch on fire?
Flammable water is caused by the release of methane gas into a drinking water supply. Methane gas occurs naturally and can be released by any kind of drilling, including water wells. In Pennsylvania officials fined Chesapeake Energy $1 million for contaminating ground water with methane. It was determined that the company had not properly cemented it’s boreholes and gas migrated up the well, between rock and into aquifers.
