Oil wells give Akron hundreds of thousands of dollars

The Plain Dealer reports that the more than 200 oil wells drilled on Akron’s city-owned land have brought the city about $375,000 a year over the last 18 years. Some of the wells are drilled around Lake Rockwell, which supplies Akron’s water.
Just last week, the City of Akron sold its mineral rights for a location near the Kenmore Leg and U.S. Route 224, as well as a location near West Waterloo Road and 27th St. SW.
Environmental activists oppose drinking within city limits. Citizens concerned about the possibility of accidents at well sites have also spoken up.

Mineral rights are the rights of the owner of the property to mine or produce any resources below the surface of the property. Mineral rights are different from surface rights.
