An opinion piece published on Erie Reader questions whether or not drillers will frack the Utica shale in northwestern Pennsylvania’s Erie County. While Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf says fracking will happen, environmentalists and world leaders say it isn’t safe.

In Pennsylvania, more than 15,000 unconventional drilling permits have been issued to frack the state’s Marcellus shale. Most permits in the western part of the state have been granted for Washington County, but counties north of there have also received permits.

According to the source, the Utica shale in Erie County is at a depth of about 6,000 feet, so it’s a prime area for horizontal fracking. Plus, the construction of pipelines, processing stations and export terminals, along with turning to natural gas to run power plants, seems to increase the chances of shale exploration in Erie County. On the other hand, local environmental groups, world leaders and scientists either oppose fracking or have studied its effects on the environment and human health.
