Pennsylvania has too many wells, not enough inspectors

Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection is strained as more inspectors are needed for the many oil and natural gas wells are brought online in the state.

According to The Tribune-Democrat, there are only 83 well inspectors in Pennsylvania. 120,000 active wells exist in the state, and not all of those wells were inspected last year. In regards to the unconventional horizontal wells, inspections should be more frequent.

From The Tribune-Democrat:

“State policy says horizontal wells should be inspected at least six times during the drilling and fracking processes. In addition, all producing wells are supposed to be checked once a year.”
