Regulators plan to increase fees for shale wells

Pennsylvania environmental regulators plan to increase fees imposed on shale gas producers later this year; however, the new amount is yet to be determined, according to StateImpact.

Marcellus Shale operators currently pay the Department of Environmental Protection a $5,000 permit application fee. A recent DEP notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin stated it is required to review the adequacy of these fees every three years and “the current fee review indicates the need for a fee increase.”

Receiving no money from the state’s General Fund, the DEP’s oil and gas program relies entirely on fees, fines, and penalties paid by oil and gas companies.
