Uninspected wells concern Bureau of Land Management

Hundreds of wells located on federal land have gone uninspected in Wyoming, Colorado and other states experiencing the fracking boom. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is pushing for Congress to allow the agency to charge an inspection fee for any new wells drilled on federal lands.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that this proposal for an inspection fee isn’t new; the BLS has asked for it in the past but hasn’t received it. The inspection fee would allow the BLS to inspect more wells than in the past and also enforce safety protocol for the wells.

From Casper Star-Tribune:

“A recent report by the Associated Press found 632 wells flagged for potential environmental or health hazards went uninspected in Wyoming between 2009 and 2012. Colorado, with 244 uninspected high risk wells, was second.”
