Seismic activity being monitored in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, there’s a history of small earthquakes. The causes aren’t very clear, and some earthquakes have occurred near shale well sites, but data hasn’t proven that the earthquakes occurred as a result of drilling.

Now, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource, researchers are working to expand Pennsylvania’s earthquake monitoring network is expanding, adding sites across the state to collect seismic data.

The source reports that the state’s earthquake monitoring network will be able to keep the best records of Pennsylvania’s seismic activity. The state Departments of Conservation and Natural Resources and Environmental Protection funded the program with a total of $531,000.
