Southgate pipeline currently on track following FERC ruling

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has ruled the 75-mile MVP Southgate Pipeline has no environmental issues that should prevent construction, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.

The $470 million project will carry gas from the much larger Mountain Valley Pipeline, a 430-mile pipeline designed to carry natural gas from the Utica and Marcellus shale fields into central Virginia. However, the Mountain Valley Pipeline is currently stalled by court and regulatory challenges to its construction.

The Southgate project has faced fewer challenges than the Mountain Valley pipeline, but there have been a few objections, including an FERC staff-issued Final Environmental Impact Statement for the project.

“We conclude that approval of the Project would result in some adverse environmental impacts, but these impacts would be reduced to less-than-significant levels through implementation of our recommendations and Mountain Valley’s proposed avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures,” the FERC says.
