The Center for Rural Pennsylvania commissioned a study of Marcellus Shale impact, highlighting population change, social change and economic change in relation to natural gas development.

The study focused on Green and Washington Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania and Bradford and Lycoming Counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. These counties have seen the most activity in the state’s Marcellus Shale.

Bradford County shows population growth consistent with increased Marcellus Shale development, but the relationship between the two factors isn’t clear or consistent to determine how shale activity affects population.
