In the early days of the shale boom, drilling three wells from a single well pad was considered a Marvel. Those days are gone.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, oil and natural gas companies such as EQT Corp. are “supersizing” their well pads in the Marcellus shale to create “superpads.” “Superpads” are concrete platforms that can house 30 to 40 wells with long horizontal lateral stretching underground for up to four miles in each direction.

So far, EQT is paving the way for “superpads” in the Marcellus with about a dozen sizes permitted for 20 or more wells.
