Activists in two Pennsylvania townships are leaning on the enforcement of local zoning ordinances to at least stall the Mariner East 2 pipeline project. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, residents in both Thornbury Township, Delaware County, and West Goshen township, Chester County, have hired attorneys and sent notices to municipal officials, stating their intentions to invoke a statute that allows private citizens to sue companies for alleged violations of town ordinances.

According to Sunoco Logistic Partners L.P. opposition in Thornbury Township, the pipeline route would take away legally guaranteed open space. In West Goshen Township, Sunoco has also been accused of violating a township ordinance that requires a certain distance between pipelines and occupied buildings.

Residents have given township officials until March 12 to enforce the ordinances before they resort to the courts.
