Many oil and gas companies have moved their business to southeastern Ohio counties, but Hilcorp Energy Company remains in the northern part of the Utica, reaping benefits from successful wells.
According to The Business Journal, most of the company’s activity is in Lawrence County, Pa. Hilcorp also has drilled in Mahoning County, Ohio and Mercer County, Pa.
A total of 70 new drilling permits were issued to Hilcorp by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection so far this year in Lawrence and Mercer counties.
At the beginning of 2014, several oil and gas companies left the northern part of the Utica to drill in Ohio’s Monroe, Noble and Belmont counties where production rates are higher. However, the northern Utica is predicted to have higher production rates as exploration continues.
