In four years, oil and gas companies have drilled nearly 1,000 horizontal wells in Ohio, according to Columbus Business First.

Leasing land for drilling began in the state in 2008. Starting with Ohio’s first horizontal well in Jefferson County in 2010, the fracking boom has spread throughout eastern and southeastern Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued a total of 1,428 fracking permits to oil and gas companies. As time goes on, oil and gas companies are drilling wells more quickly, adding to the increasing number of wells that are drilled per year.
