Shale Gas Job Creation Number May be Too High

According to a new report released Thursday by the Keystone Research Center and Pennsylvania Budget and Policy center, claims that the shale gas boom isn’t employing as many people as the shale gas industry suggests.

The report, “Exaggerting the Employment Impacts of Shale Drilling: How and Why,” says the number of people employed is much lower than the industry’s estimate of 200,000 people.

What’s the grand total? The report found that 33,000 jobs were created by shale gas and its supporting industries.

The numbers:

* 22,411 jobs in Pennsylvania

* 2,791 jobs in Ohio

* 6,022 jobs in West Virginia

* 563 in Virginia

* 648 in New York

* 324 in Maryland

“Supporting jobs”

The cause for the large disparity in the numbers is due to the different definitions of what a “supporting job” is. The report didn’t include ancillary jobs such as jobs in trucking and sewage treatment — jobs that existed before the shale boom began in 2005.

The industry often cites jobs created in those industries as jobs created by the shale gas boom.
