New York is now the only state with rich shale natural gas deposits to ban fracking, reports The New York Times.
New York has had a de facto ban on fracking since 2008, but New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his administration announced the statewide ban Dec. 17. Some communities around the state had already passed local moratoriums on fracking, plus the state had planned restrictions, so 63 percent of the state’s shale was off limits before the decision on the ban was made.
Health concerns were cited as the reason for the ban, despite fracking being a possible answer to economic problems. A study was conducted on water contamination and air pollution created by fracking. The study didn’t show enough evidence that fracking was a safe procedure for natural gas drilling.
