A fire broke out at a Marcellus Shale well pad in southwestern Pennsylvania’s Washington County Feb. 4. According to The Observer-Reporter, the fire then spread to plastic sheeting on the well pad.

The Range Resources well pad, located on Ross Road in North Strabane Township, is in the early stages of production, which made it easier for first responders to control the fire than if the well pad had been in production for a long period of time. A Range Resources spokesman compared the fire’s smoke to that of a burning tire due to the discharged liquid and quickly spreading flames.

Firefighters took less than an hour to get the flames under control, using water and foam.
