(Locations of Ohio injection wells as of Dec. 9, 2014.)
WKBN reports that several northeast Ohio state representatives introduced House Bill 422, legislation that would prohibit injection wells in hundred-year flood plains. The bill also asks that trucks hauling brine to injection wells have GPS trackers installed on them.
The proposed bill would ban underground storage areas for brine and other waste. It would also require monitoring for leaks and seismic activity.
Over the past few years, several incidents involving leaks at injection well sites and illegal dumping of brine have brought the issue of injection well rules to lawmakers’ attentions.
