The Patriot-News reports that although Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale industry was seen by some as a job creator, but employment counts aren’t as high as people once thought.
Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett and trade groups quoted 250,000 as the number of jobs created due to Marcellus shale development a couple years ago. This count included many industries related to the shale industry.
Today, Gov. Tom Wolf’s labor department cites 28,926 as the number of Marcellus gas jobs. This number includes drilling, extraction, support operations, pipeline construction and transportation jobs. As of the second quarter of 2015, there were about 6 million total workers in Pennsylvania, so Marcellus gas jobs make up 0.5 percent of the state’s workforce.
