Apache Corp.’s most recent find in a new West Texas oil field has the promise to become one of the biggest energy finds of the past decade. The discovery, which is being called “Alpine High,” has the potential to produce at least two billion barrels of oil, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Situate near the Davis Mountains, the area was previously overlooked because geologists and engineers believed it wouldn’t be conducive to hydraulic fracturing.
Apache’s share of the land — 300,000 of the 450,000 acres — is estimated to be worth at least $8 billion.
With the first of many wells being utilized, Apache says the new production will provide at a least a 30 percent profit margin at today’s prices, including all costs associated with drilling.
