Appalachian Basin needs more outlets for natural gas

Natural gas production in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays has tripled in the past five years. As a result, the region needs to add to its network of natural gas-fired power plants and develop more projects such as the ethane “cracker” plant that Royal Dutch Shell is building in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, according to Engineering News-Record.
The Appalachian Basin’s future depends on several pipeline projects that would allow Utica and Marcellus natural gas to be shipped east, north and west.
“It’s all going to depend on our ability to build pipeline from where it is to where it needs to be,” said Sam Andrus, IHS Markit’s senior director for North American natural gas research.
