Despite being delayed several times, Cambridge-Guernsey County Community Improvement Corporation Executive Director Norm Blanchard recently revealed that a March groundbreaking is underway for the Guernsey Power Station project, according to The Daily Jeffersonian.
The timetable for beginning work on the project was moved back on various occasions due to the site’s proximity to Interstate 77, environmental matters because of the wetlands designation on the planned site and the fact that the area — like much of Guernsey County — sits atop a honeycomb of old, abandoned coal mines. With those issues resolved all that’s left be completed are some final negotiations.
When it’s finished the natural gas-fuels power station is expected to produce 1,650 megawatts of electricity, which would be enough to power about 1.5 million homes. It will employ 300 to 500 construction workers and 25 permanent highly skilled employees.
