Emissions rules may be expanded to include unconventional operations

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is considering potential regulations that would expand air emissions rules for both existing and new unconventional oil and gas facilities that aren’t already covered by general permits for upstream and midstream equipment, according to Natural Gas Intelligence.

The EPA’s outreach efforts to seek input on the potential rules may lead to regulations a lot like those in effect for the industry under the U.S. EPA’s New Source Performance Standards. However, Ohio’s potential rules would cover more than new and modified facilities, extending to all unconventional oil and gas facilities.

The new regulations could cover equipment installed at well sites, as well as, equipment installed at midstream compressor stations and other equipment involved in processing natural gas once it leaves a well.
