The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management wants to award up to $25 million to contractors to plug over 200 orphan and idle wells, according to the Canton Repository.
The ODNR wants to award the contracts before the final years ends in June. Contractors who want to bid have until Jan. 20 to be certified via the Ohio Department of Administrative Services.
Ohio started plugging orphan wells in the 1970s, using a percentage of the fees and taxes collected on oil and natural gas production to hire contractors. Today, the plugging program has more money than ever.
