A new nanomaterial cement mixture may be the solution for sealing leaking natural gas wells, according to Penn State scientists.
Leaky wells are considered a potential source of methane emissions. When wells are drilled cement is used to secure the pipe to the surrounding rock, creating a seal that prevents methane from migrating and entering waterways or the atmosphere. However, over time, cracks in a wells casing can allow methane to escape.
Scientists have developed a very flexible cement that is more resistant to cracking and a repair technique that utilizes nanomaterial to better seal cracks.
