The U.S. oil and gas rig count fell to 599, dropping five rigs collectively across oil and gas plays, according to Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.

The decrease was fueled by a slowdown in drilling activity in oil-focused plays where rig counts fell 10 to 457. The Permian Basin saw the biggest decline where active rigs fell six to 253.

Meanwhile, natural gas-focused plays saw rig counts climb five to 142. The Marcellus Shale play added one rig, bringing its total to 33, and the Utica Shale dropped one to bring its total to 12.
