The United Kingdom has commissioned a study of unconventional natural gas extraction, seemingly opening the door to shale development after it was shut down by regulators more than two years ago, according to Natural Gas Intelligence.

The British Geological Survey is to have a report completed by the end of June at the request of Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

The purpose of the report is to assess any progress that’s been made since the government suspended test operations in the Bowland Shale in November 2019 following a small earthquake. The geological survey will explore new drilling techniques, geologic modeling or new locations, among other things, that could help minimize the seismic risk associated with unconventional drilling and completion techniques.

The request for the new report comes ahead of a yet-to-be-released UK strategy that’s expected to outline more domestic energy production and a cut in Russian energy imports.
