European Union to ban Russian oil by end of year

The European Commission has completed its proposal to phase out Russian oil imports, banning oil imports and refined petroleum products by the end of the year, according to The Washington Post.

The proposal must be approved by all member states before going into effect. It reflects the ongoing negotiations over how far the European Union should go to penalize Russia for its war in Ukraine.

It will be a more gradual phaseout than the immediate embargo that some countries had supported — oil imports will be banned after six months and refined petroleum products will be banned by the end of the year.

The announcement didn’t mention Russian gas.
