Beware: Silica at fracking sites linked to health problems

An arm of the Center for Disease Control says that silica sand at fracking sites may cause silicosis, a lung disease, according to Reuters.

The CDC tested air samples from several fracking sites in Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Colorado, Arkansas and Texas. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health found silica levels above defined safety limits.

Exposure to silica can lead to silicosis, a disease that causes inflammation and scarring of lung tissues and can impair breathing, according to the study.

The report recommends using protective gear and alternative proppants like ceramics, where feasible.
