Chesapeake to agrees to pay $1.9M civil penalty to settle Pa. stream damage suit

Chesapeake will pay a $1.9 million civil penalty to resolve a lawsuit over natural gas-related damage to streams and wetlands in five Pennsylvania counties, according to Penn Live.
The proposed consent decree was filed last week in U.S. Middle District Court at the same time a suit the federal government and state brought against Chesapeake Appalachia.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will receive half of the penalty payment, which is pending the approval of the Texas court handling the company’s bankruptcy filing. Although Chesapeake neither admits nor denies liability, it has agreed to seek expeditious approval for the payment from the bankruptcy court.
