In September 2014, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued an order that denied the operation of and limited injections at a Class II injection well in Coitsville Township, Mahoning County. According to The Business Journal, anti-fracking group FrackFree Mahoning County wants ODNR to uphold that decision as Rex Energy Corp. seeks to make adjustments to the well in order to complete limited injections.
The Coitsville Township injection well, named Khalil #3, was drilled and owned by D&L Energy Inc. After D&L filed bankruptcy, it was sold to Rex Energy subsidiary R.E. Disposal, LLC. The well is located near several areas of reported seismic activity believed to be related to injection wells.
FrackFree believes that injection wells, which hold wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing, puts public health at risk and contributes to man-made earthquakes.
