Corrosion was found on two welds of a natural gas pipeline that exploded April 29 in Salem Township in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource reports that the Texas Eastern pipeline was installed in 1981 and was tape coated, a method of coating the pipe’s welds that was accepted and preferred. One of the corroded welds was located where the pipeline exploded.
According to the source, corrosion is the second-largest cause of pipeline failure. Spectra Energy must follow a plan from the federal pipeline regulator before putting the pipeline back online.
