Fracking wastewater won’t yet be allowed to be transported by barge on the Ohio River, according to WDRB.
The Coast Guard had originally proposed that barges be permitted to ship large amounts of the wastewater in Oct. 2013, but withdrew the proposal Feb. 23. Companies wanted to take wastewater from drilling locations to disposal sites in Ohio, Louisiana and Texas. However, the Coast Guard had not received much interest in shipping wastewater on barges.
Barge owners may still seek approval to transport fracking wastewater on a case-by-case basis.
The source reports that the Ohio River absorbed 24 million pounds of chemicals in 2013, so fracking wastewater is a concern to some citizens. Five million people get drinking water from the river.
