Gas-fired power plants taking the place of old coal plants in Ohio

Several gas-fired power plants are either being built or are being considered in Ohio, according to The Plain Dealer. Federal rules have required companies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and some companies are closing coal-fired plants instead of upgrading or replacing them with gas-fired plants.

In Carroll County, land is being graded to prepare for the construction of a 750-megawatt power plant that will be able to power an average of 750,000 homes. The power plant will be located about two miles from Carrollton.

Near Toledo, the Oregon Clean Energy gas-fired power plant is being built. A 525-megawatt gas-fired power plant is planned in Middletown, Ohio, in Butler County. In Trumbull County, an 800-megawatt gas-fired power plant will be built in Lordstown. A 725-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Avon Lake is being converted to gas. Since 2003, a power plant in Vinton County has been in place and will be able to power over a million homes once an expansion and new technology is completed.

These new plants rely on gas turbines and steam boilers and are more efficient than coal-fired plants. The gas will be delivered to the plants by pipeline so that the plants aren’t as as vulnerable to natural disasters or terrorists.
