Recently released research claiming that the amount of potentially recoverable natural and gas and oil from the Utica Shale has been met with varying reactions.

WV Public Broadcasting reports that Consumer Energy Alliance, a group that advocates for energy consumers, took the research to be positive, especially for the Appalachian areas that could benefit from shale development. On the opposing side, West Virginia Sierra Club is concerned about how shale development will contribute to climate change. There is also a concern about fracking’s regulations.

The research estimated that about 782 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and about 2 billion barrels of oil could be recovered from the Utica Shale.
