In an effort to oppose the increase in an oil and gas severance tax, Ohio elected, business, labor and community leaders have formed a coalition to support the state’s shale industry.

The Business Journal reports that the group, named the Protect Ohio Jobs Coalition, is focused on making sure that tax policies don’t stop the growth of the oil and gas industry, businesses that support the oil and gas industry and the jobs that are created from involvement in the oil and gas industry.

Almost 14,000 Ohio companies play a part in the state’s Utica Shale industry. If a severance tax was enacted, drillers may be discouraged from further exploration in Ohio. The severance tax increase was proposed in House Bill 64.
