Methane is the main components of natural gas, and up through 2012, 29 percent of U.S. methane emissions were a result of oil and natural gas production.
According to The Patriot News, the Obama administration’s goal to cut methane emissions by 40 to 45 percent by 2025 could positively impact the environment while it negatively impacts the shale gas industry. To achieve this, new natural gas wells will have to comply with the new rules. Existing wells would continue to release methane emissions, as pointed out by environmental groups.
Cutting methane emissions is ultimately up to the Environmental Protection Agency, while the Interior Department would work to reduce methane leaks from wells on public lands.
