ODNR issues Utica permits to Chesapeake, Ascent

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources granted six new drilling permits for horizontal wells in Ohio’s Utica shale during the week ended March 16, according to The Youngstown Business Journal.

Chesapeake Exploration LLC received three of the permits, while the other three were issued to Ascent Resources LLC. Both companies plan to drill wells in Harrison County.

As of March 16, oil and gas companies have drilled 2,552 wells in Ohio’s Utica with 2,168 of those wells producing. In total, the ODNR has issued 3,037 horizontal well permits since energy companies started exploring the play in 2010.
