In March, the 2015 volume of liquid drilling wastes injected in Ohio was reported as 28.8 million 42-gallon barrels. But now, Akron Beacon Journal reports that that number is increasing.
As of May 20, 31.4 million 42-gallon barrels of liquid drilling wastes were reported to have been injected last year. Based on this number, 2015’s total grew by 42.8 percent since 2014.
Injecting waste water from fracking has been linked to earthquakes that have occurred in Ohio as well as other drilling states in recent years. The top 10 Ohio counties for waste water injection include: Athens, Coshocton, Guernsey, Tuscarawas, Muskingum, Washington, Portage, Trumbull, Meigs and Ashtabula counties. All of the counties with the most injected drilling waste are located in southeastern or northeastern parts of the state.
