The shale gas boom in Ohio has fueled plans for six natural gas electric plants across the state.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that NTE Energy is planning a 1,000-megawatt plant in Circleville. Near Toledo, the Oregon Clean Energy Center is under construction. In Middletown, there’s a 475-megawatt power plant being built.

Building natural gas-fired power plants is favorable now as prices are affordable, and because coal-fired plants are aging and hard to keep in compliance with clean air laws, according to the source.
