Trump water permit rule may make it tougher to block pipelines and other projects

The Trump administration issued a new water permit rule that will make it harder for states and Native American tribes to block interstate pipelines and other large projects that impact waterways, according to Kallanish Energy.

The new rule will only allow states and tribes top have one year to review projects for water pollution permits. Additionally, the change would narrow the scope of what they can consider to water issues only, meaning projects could not be vetoed because they contribute to global warming or other reasons.

The change impacts Section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act that currently gives states and tribes the authority to veto pipelines and other projects.
