An “walking” rig is being used to drill the horizontal wells on Pittsburgh International Airport property, reports Pittsburgh Post-Gazette PowerSource.

Six vertical wells have already been drilled on one of the well pads on the airport’s property, but the walking rig is being used to drill the horizontal portions. Typically, a rig must be taken down before moving to another well. This rig can drill between 120 and 200 feet per hour. It then “walks” to the next well.

Consol Energy began drilling at the airport in August 2014. There will be six well pads and a total of 45 wells on the 9,000 acre property.
