During the week of Jan. 10 to 16, 18 permits were issued to drill oil and natural gas wells in the shale plays of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, according to Marcellus Drilling News. That figure was down from 24 during the week prior.
Pennsylvania accounted for the majority of new permits with 12 issued from Jan. 10 to 16. Most of the permitting activity was in the northeastern part of the state in Lycoming and Susquehanna counties.
Ohio issued four new drilling permits, evenly split between Columbiana and Harrison counties.
West Virginia issued two new permits — one in Lewis County and one in Wentzel county.
