Using Class VI injection wells to aid in decarbonization efforts was the focus of several presentations during the 76th annual Ohio Oil and Gas Association meeting earlier this month, according to Farm and Dairy.
In recent years, carbon capture and sequestration has been proposed as a strategy to help the oil and gas industry reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Class VI injection wells may be an option as they are used to inject carbon dioxide into deep rock formations for long-term storage. However, they are relatively new and only a few permitted Class VI injection wells are scattered around the U.S.
These wells are permitted at the federal level with the exception of Wyoming and North Dakota, which have primacy over Class VI allowing them to run their own permitting and regulation programs.
Ohio is in the process of applying for primacy for Class VI wells and West Virginia is one of four states with a pending application for Class VI injection well primacy.
