CNX Resources Corp. paid the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection $200,000 in penalties for discharges of fluid from well pads in Greene County, according to Pittsburgh Business Times.

The total breaks down to a $125,000 civil penalty for violations at RHL 71 and RHL 87 well sites and a $75,000 penalty for a violation at RHL 4, according to the DEP.

There were three separate incidents that occurred on Sept. 18, 2019, Dec. 2, 2019 and Jan. 23, 2021, where gallons of production fluid were discharged into the ground, contaminating the soil. The incidents violated state regulations on controlling and disposing of production fluids and unauthorized discharges into groundwater. Although they didn’t involve surface water, the discharges went into a sediment basin and rock channel, which violates state law.
