CNX plans to drill deeper Utica wells on existing Marcellus well pad

CNX has submitted an application to the state Department of Environmental Protection to obtain a permit to drill four new wells to tap natural gas from Utica shale at an existing Marcellus shale well pad in Washington Township, Pennsylvania, according to the Tribune-Review.

The new application is unique because the company is tapping both the Marcellus and Utica shale formations from the same well pad — the Mamont South 1 Pad. Utica shale gas reserves reside deeper than in the Marcellus shale, causing an occasional overlap in Pennsylvania. Such is the case at CNX’s site.

The Mamont South 1 Pad was first developed with five wells for Marcellus shale in 2014.
