GreenHunter Water, LLC, the company wanting to transport fracking waste via barge on U.S. rivers, sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month.

Huffpost Green reports that the company, the subsidiary of Texas-based GreenHunter Resources, Inc., filed for bankruptcy after the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers said it would consider permits to ship fracking waste on U.S. rivers. Last year, the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers granted GreenHunter Resources a permit for transporting legacy fluids from conventional wells on the Ohio River. The company currently transports fracking waste from Pennsylvania and West Virginia by truck to Ohio.

One concern with transporting fracking waste on waterways is the potential for accidents and spills, which would contaminate drinking water, as has happened in the past in Appalachia.
