As the natural gas supply continues to grow, the opportunities in the industries surrounding it also keep gaining momentum.

According to The Canton Repository, the most recent beneficiary could be the regional plastics industry with work advancing on two multi-billion dollar crack plants along the Ohio River.

Building the first major U.S. cracker outside the Gulf Coast, Shell Chemical Appalachia is working on a $6 billion ethane cracker near Monaco, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, PTT Global Chemical, a Thai company, is considering a $5 billion endeavor in Belmont County, Ohio.

The plants would be able to turn ethane into chemicals used to make plastic products. The cracker projects have the potential to boost the economies of eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
